Mecklenburg County Teen Court

... is designed to provide juveniles with no previous convictions a second chance when they admit their guilt to a misdemeanor offense and agree to be tried by a jury of their peers and take responsibility for their actions. Defendants are referred to Teen Court only by the Department of Juvenile Justice and by School Resource Officers and are thoroughly screened for appropriateness to the program. The program also trains teen volunteers in the legal process as jurors, clerks of court, bailiffs, and attorneys, and emphasizes communication, leadership, and diversity skills. Court hearings take place normally on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mecklenburg County Courts Building.
In 2008-2009, Mecklenburg County Teen Court assisted 433 youthful offenders and volunteer teens to provide 7,941 hours of community service. A total of 153 defendants successfully completed their cases.
Teens who are interested in becoming volunteers in the program must be between the ages of 11 and 18, be willing to make a year-long commitment (attending as their school, family, and extra-curricular activities allow), and fill out and submit the Teen Volunteer Application. Once the application has been received, the parent and child will be contacted by phone to answer any questions, give additional information, and schedule the teen for training. The program provides community service hours for students who require them.

Another 8,000 men, women and children received protein-enriched food products through donations to Loaves & Fishes and Second Harvest FOODBANK of Metrolina.

Operation School BellĀ®

... provides basic school clothing and books to children in need in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to enhance self-esteem, promote learning, and encourage regular school attendance. With the help of an Assistance League of Charlotte volunteer, each child selects a new jacket, two uniforms (white polo shirts and navy slacks), a pair of school shoes, six pairs of socks and underwear, a book and a grooming kit. In 2008-2009, Operation School Bell clothed 1,590 children through the School Bell store and provided an additional 44 children with new clothes through school clothes closets and Community Link. Since 1995, the program has clothed over 19,000 children. Operation School Bell is the signature philanthropic program of Assistance League nationwide, serving nearly 250,000 children annually.
